Every Policy Type Explained

7 Types of Life Insurance — Which One Is Right for You?

Each policy type solves a different problem. Here’s what each one does, who it’s best for, and what it typically costs.

Most Popular
📅

Term Life Insurance

Best for: Income replacement · Mortgage payoff · Young families

Coverage for a fixed period — 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. If you die during the term, your beneficiaries receive the full death benefit tax-free. If you outlive the term, coverage ends (no payout). The simplest and most affordable way to get a large death benefit.

✓Lowest cost per dollar of coverage
✓Ideal for temporary needs (mortgage, education)
✓Convertible to permanent in many policies
✗No cash value · Coverage expires

Typical cost: $25–$55/mo · Healthy 35-yr-old · $500K · 20-yr term

Full term life guide →
Permanent
♾️

Whole Life Insurance

Best for: Legacy planning · Estate transfer · Guaranteed cash value

Permanent coverage with guaranteed level premiums and guaranteed cash value growth. The cash value grows tax-deferred and can be borrowed against tax-free — making it a powerful retirement income supplement for those with large pre-tax IRA/401(k) balances who need tax-free income sources.

✓Guaranteed death benefit — never expires
✓Tax-deferred cash value growth
✓Tax-free policy loans (no IRMAA impact)
✗Higher premiums than term · Less flexible than IUL

Typical cost: $200–$400/mo · Healthy 45-yr-old · $250K whole life

Full whole life guide →
Flexible
📈

Universal Life & IUL

Best for: Business owners · High earners · Retirement supplement

Permanent coverage with flexible premiums and an adjustable death benefit. Indexed Universal Life (IUL) links cash value growth to a market index — capturing upside in good years with a zero-percent floor protecting against losses. Popular as a tax-efficient retirement income supplement for high earners who have maxed other accounts.

✓Flexible premiums — adjust as income changes
✓IUL: market upside with zero-loss floor
✓Tax-free retirement income via policy loans
✗More complex · requires active management

Best use: Tax-free retirement income after maxing 401(k) and Roth

Mortgage Protection Insurance

Best for: Homeowners · New purchases · Refinances

A specialized form of decreasing term insurance designed to pay off your mortgage if you die — so your family keeps the home. Most mortgage protection policies include living benefits: if you’re diagnosed with a critical illness, chronic condition, or terminal diagnosis, you can access a portion of the death benefit while still alive.

✓Coverage decreases as mortgage balance drops
✓Living benefits for critical/chronic illness
✓Often no medical exam required
✗Less flexible than a standard term policy

Typical cost: $40–$90/mo · $300K mortgage · Age 40 · Good health

24–48 Hr Approval
⚡

No-Exam Life Insurance

Best for: Busy professionals · Mild health conditions · Fast coverage

No blood draw. No urine sample. No waiting weeks for a nurse to visit your home. Accelerated underwriting uses health questions, prescription database checks, and driving records to approve policies — often the same day. Coverage amounts up to $1M+ are available. For applicants in excellent health, accelerated underwriting often produces rates as competitive as fully underwritten policies.

✓Approval in 24–48 hours
✓Up to $1M+ coverage without an exam
✓Guaranteed issue available for seniors
✗Can cost slightly more than fully underwritten

Guaranteed issue: No questions asked · Ages 45–85 · Up to $25K

Full no-exam guide →
🕊️

Final Expense & Burial Insurance

Best for: Seniors 50–85 · Funeral planning · Debt payoff

Small whole life policies — typically $5,000 to $25,000 — designed specifically to cover end-of-life costs. The average Maryland funeral runs $9,000–$12,000. Most final expense policies never expire, never increase in premium, and pay out quickly — often within days of a claim — so family members aren’t waiting weeks for funds they urgently need.

✓No medical exam — health questions only
✓Guaranteed issue options for serious conditions
✓Premiums fixed for life · Policy never lapses
✗Lower coverage amounts · For end-of-life only

Typical cost: $30–$80/mo · $10K policy · Age 65 · Standard health

Full final expense guide →
Lifetime Income
💰

Annuities

Best for: Retirement income · Market-risk aversion · TSP/IRA rollovers

Annuities convert a lump sum into guaranteed monthly income for life — your personal pension. Fixed indexed annuities provide principal protection plus market-linked upside. MYGAs offer guaranteed interest rates. SPIAs create immediate income. QLACs reduce RMDs. We offer all types — and we never sell variable annuities.

✓Guaranteed income you can’t outlive
✓Principal protection — zero market loss floor
✓TSP, 401(k), and IRA rollovers accepted
✗Surrender periods apply · Less liquid than CDs

$300K → ~$1,650–$2,100/mo guaranteed lifetime income (age 65, 2025)

💡 Key Insight: The Cost of Waiting

A healthy 35-year-old pays $30/month for a $500K 20-year term policy. The same coverage for a healthy 45-year-old costs $80/month. Waiting 10 years costs an extra $600/year — $12,000 over the policy term. Waiting also means 10 more years of health events that could make you uninsurable or push you to a much higher rate class.

The best time to buy life insurance was when you were younger. The second best time is right now — before the next health event.

Find Your Fit

Which Life Insurance Is Right for Your Situation?

👨‍👩‍👧 Young Family with a Mortgage

You need the highest death benefit at the lowest cost to protect your family while the kids are home and the mortgage is large.

Best fit: 20-year term + mortgage protection with living benefits

🏛️ Federal Employee (FERS/CSRS)

FEGLI gets expensive after 65. A private term or whole life policy often gives more coverage at a lower cost — with a survivor benefit built in for GPO planning.

Best fit: Term or whole life to replace lost survivor SS income from GPO. Federal planning →

💼 Business Owner / High Earner

You’ve maxed your 401(k) and Roth. IUL provides additional tax-free retirement income, key-person business coverage, and buy-sell funding.

Best fit: IUL for tax-free retirement income supplement

🏦 Retiree with Estate to Transfer

Your IRA will pass to heirs who’ll owe income tax on every dollar. A whole life policy creates a tax-free inheritance that offsets the tax burden.

Best fit: Whole life funded via Roth conversion strategy →

👴 Senior 60–85 Planning Final Expenses

You don’t need a million-dollar policy. You need a small guaranteed policy that covers funeral costs and outstanding bills so your family isn’t scrambling.

Best fit: Final expense — no exam, approved same day, premiums never increase

🏥 Health Conditions or Past Declines

Different carriers rate health conditions very differently. Diabetes, heart disease, and prior cancer diagnoses that get declined at one carrier may be approved at another.

Best fit: Simplified issue or no-exam — we know which carriers are most lenient for each condition

How We Found the Right Policy for Them

Term Life · Rockville, MD · Age 38

James & Keisha — Protecting a $520K Mortgage

James was paying $94/month through his employer group life plan — only 2x salary, no portability, would end if he changed jobs. We found him a 30-year, $750,000 term policy for $48/month from North American Company (A+ AM Best). He saved $552/year and got 3.5x more coverage that he owns outright regardless of employment.

Saved $552/year. Coverage increased from $180K to $750K.

Final Expense · Silver Spring, MD · Age 72

Dorothy — “My Kids Won’t Have to Scramble”

Dorothy had been declined twice for life insurance due to controlled Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. She assumed she couldn’t get coverage at all. We matched her with Mutual of Omaha’s Living Promise policy — $15,000 face amount, $62/month, approved same day. No exam, simplified health questions, guaranteed not to cancel.

Approved same day. Previously declined elsewhere. $15K covers full funeral costs.

Whole Life · Bethesda, MD · Age 58

Robert — IRA Tax Problem, Solved with Life Insurance

Robert had $1.1M in a traditional IRA. His two adult children would inherit a massive tax bill — at their income level, every IRA dollar would be taxed at 32–37%. We structured a whole life policy using a portion of his annual IRA distributions to fund $400,000 in tax-free death benefit — a legacy that passes completely outside his taxable estate.

$400K tax-free inheritance created. Heirs’ tax liability reduced by an estimated $148K.

Every Situation Is Different. Yours Deserves Its Own Strategy.

We don’t quote you the first policy that fits the fields in a form. We ask the right questions, understand your full financial picture, and find the product — and carrier — that actually serves your family best.

Common Questions

Life Insurance FAQs

What’s the difference between term and whole life insurance? ▼
Term life covers you for a set period — 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. If you die during that term, your beneficiaries receive the death benefit. If you outlive the term, coverage ends with no payout and no cash value. Whole life is permanent — it covers you for your entire life, never expires, and builds guaranteed cash value you can borrow against tax-free. Term is best for temporary obligations (mortgage, income replacement while children are young). Whole life is best for legacy planning, estate transfer, and long-term wealth protection. Most people who compare the two end up with term for the bulk of their coverage and a smaller whole life policy for permanent needs. Term guide → Whole life guide →
How much life insurance do I actually need? ▼
The common “10–12x income” rule is a starting point, not a final answer. A more precise calculation adds up: remaining mortgage balance + total consumer debt + years until youngest child is independent × annual household expenses + your spouse’s income shortfall if you were gone + final expenses + any estate transfer goals. For a federal employee with a pension, this number is very different than for a self-employed business owner with no pension. We calculate the exact coverage target — by obligation — during a free consultation.
Can I get life insurance if I have health problems? ▼
Usually yes — the key is knowing which carriers are lenient for your specific condition. Controlled diabetes, treated hypertension, past cancer (in remission), obesity, and sleep apnea all have carriers who specialize in those conditions and offer competitive rates. If you’ve been declined before, it often means you applied to the wrong carrier — not that you’re uninsurable. No-exam and simplified issue policies are also available for people with complex health histories, with guaranteed issue final expense available for those with the most serious conditions. No-exam options →
Is employer group life insurance enough? ▼
Rarely. Employer group life — including FEGLI — typically provides 1–2x salary, which covers less than 2 years of income for most households. More importantly, employer life insurance is not portable: if you leave the job, lose it, or retire, the coverage ends. If your health has changed by that point, you may not be able to get individual coverage at an affordable rate. A private policy you own is yours regardless of employer changes. We typically recommend a private policy to own for life, with group coverage as a supplement — never as a primary strategy.
What are living benefits in a life insurance policy? ▼
Living benefits (also called accelerated death benefit riders) allow you to access a portion of your death benefit while you are still alive if you are diagnosed with a qualifying critical illness (heart attack, stroke, cancer), chronic illness (inability to perform 2+ ADLs), or terminal illness. For example, a $500,000 policy with living benefits could pay out $150,000–$250,000 if you are diagnosed with cancer — money you can use for treatment, long-term care, or any other expense. Many mortgage protection and term policies include living benefits at no extra cost. This is an important feature to look for.
How is life insurance different from long-term care insurance? ▼
Life insurance pays a death benefit to your beneficiaries after you die. Long-term care insurance pays benefits to cover care costs (nursing home, assisted living, home health) while you are alive but unable to care for yourself. The two products serve different risks — but they are increasingly combined in hybrid life + LTC policies, where the same premium funds both a death benefit and a long-term care benefit pool. If you need care, the LTC benefit pays. If you never need care, your heirs receive the death benefit. Hybrid policies eliminate the “use it or lose it” concern of standalone LTC insurance.
